Our History

Serving members for more than 80 years

Corazo Credit Union has been a trusted financial partner for more than 80 years, growing alongside the people and neighborhoods that inspire its mission. Established on August 21, 1942, it began as Imperial Federal Credit Union, the first credit union chartered in the Imperial County, California. In 1998, the institution transitioned to a state-chartered credit union and adopted the name First Imperial Credit Union, aligning with regulatory requirements while continuing to prioritize member needs.
Throughout its history, Corazo has remained committed to providing inclusive, equitable financial services with an exceptional member-focused experience.

On September 8, 2025, the credit union embraced a new chapter by changing its name to Corazo Credit Union—a name inspired by the heart of its mission and the vibrant diversity of the people it serves. This change reflects a deepened commitment to inclusivity, unity, and the belief that People are the Pulse of everything it does.

From its founding roots to its forward-looking vision, Corazo continues to be a place where ownership, empowerment, and community thrive.

Currently, the credit union holds a community charter which enables Corazo to invite all who live, work, worship in the Imperial County and 14 cities in Riverside County (Banning, Beaumont, Blythe, Cathedral City, Coachella, Desert Hot Springs, Indian Wells, Indio, La Quinta, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, Thermal, and Thousand Palms) to become members. In addition to being a state regulated financial institution, Corazo CU is designated as a Low Income, Minority Depository Institution (MDI) and a Community Development Financial Instituion (CDFI).  Over the years, the credit union has made many changes including names and slogans, but what has never changed is its guiding philosophy of "People helping people".

Corazo Credit Union serves more than 22,000 members with assets of more than $200 million.  We invite you to become a member and enjoy competitive deposit and loan products to personalized service that puts your goals first.
